What you need to clear cargo
A practical guide to the documents customs usually asks for at the port of Mombasa. Requirements vary by cargo — we confirm the exact list for your shipment.
For most cargo (sea or air)
- Bill of lading (sea) or airway bill (air) — from the shipping line or airline.
- Commercial invoice — showing the seller, buyer, goods and value.
- Packing list — cartons, weights and dimensions.
- Your KRA PIN — required for every customs entry.
- ID or company registration — matching the importer's name.
For vehicles
- Bill of lading and commercial invoice.
- Export / deregistration certificate from the origin country (e.g. Japanese export certificate).
- Pre-shipment inspection documents where applicable.
- Your KRA PIN and ID for registration.
For regulated goods
- Food, cosmetics and some electronics may need KEBS approval.
- Medicines need Pharmacy & Poisons Board permits.
- Chemicals and sensitive goods need advance declaration.
Restricted and prohibited items cannot be shipped. If you're unsure whether your goods qualify, ask before you buy — it's cheaper than finding out at the port.
